Nuclotron-a Superconducting Accelerator of Nuclei at LHE, JINR (Creation, Operation, Development)

The report made at the scientific seminar dedicated to the 50th anniversary of LHE, JINR is presented. A historical overview of the work performed at the laboratory in the period 1977-1993 on design and construction of the superconducting accelerator nuclotron is given. The new technical solutions and inventions made in the course of its construction are described. The main parameters of the accelerator subsystems, both designed and achieved in the period 1993-2003 during 25 runs, including the accelerator tun-ing-up and physics experiments with exotic beams of relativistic nuclei, are given. The plans of the accelerator development, creation of a booster and superconducting channels for beam transportation to physical setups, implementation of multiturn injection of polarized deuterons to increase intensity in experiments on spin physics are discussed.
