New Permineralized Early Cretaceous Plants from the RajmahalHills, Jharkhand, India

A number of new petrifications of plants are described, studied in thin sections prepared of the Early Cretaceous silicified cherts collected from Nipania locality, Santhal Pargana, Rajmahal Hills, Jharkhand. An archegoniophore with a receptacle (Marchantiales) and an unbranched costate thallus with bunches of rhizoids, archegonial clusters and globular sporogonium (Metzgeriales) are described for the first time from the area. Of interest are a cylindrical pteridophytic gametophyte bearing fertile structures and a glossopteroid leaf with reticulate venation. A median longitudinal section of a rootlet showing a distinct root cap, apical meristematic cells and other tissues has been described here for the first time.
