Austin began by pointing out that onshore oil and gas has been produced in the UK for over 150 years. He then went on to talk about the development of the onshore sector, noting that the 1979 oil crisis accelerated activity. 'Many of the fields IGas operates today were discovered and developed during this period,' he said. 'In all, around 2,000 wells have been drilled in Britain and about 10% of this number have been fracked at some point in their past. Today there are around 120 sites across the country producing more than 25,000 barrels of oil, and approximately 250,000 barrels of produced water are being disposed of safely under permits from the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.
