Trinidad and Tobago's new energy economy will consist of four components: The retrieval of conventional left-behind crude oil. The extraction of heavy oil (< 18° API, according to Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs (MEEA) definition). The development of gas reserves that are cross-border with Venezuela. Success in the deepwater (1,000-3,500 metres) exploration programme which is currently in train. This is the scenario outlined by the present Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs, Kevin Christian Ramnarine. However, it should be pointed out that Ramnarine's party, the United National Congress (UNC)-the lead player in the People's Partnership (PP) government-is due to face a general election in the country on 7 September. At the time of writing, there is no knowing what the outcome will be or even if Ramnarine will be retained as Energy Minister.
