Abu Dhabi state-owned Adnoc's plan for the UAE to become self-sufcient in natural gas by 2030 has been boosted by a signifcant shallow gas fnd straddling the border with neighbouring Dubai. The estimated 80 trillion ft~3 (2.3bn m~3) discovery is likely to accelerate Adnoc's drive for gas self-sufciency, and could provide it with a chance to increase LNG exports. The frm previously said it was confdent of reaching its goal with existing assets, but the new fnd not only adds another gas source with potentially low extraction costs, it also improves the UAE's energy security while strengthening ties between the two largest economies in the emirates.
