Angola’s sub-salt hopes come under pressure

The development of Angola’s offshore sub-salt oil potential looks uncertain because of slumping oil prices and disappointing drilling results. State-owned oil company Sonangol hopes the sub-salt will yield the next generation of oil fields to offset declines at Angola’s post-salt deepwater projects. Firms including Norwegian state-controlled Statoil, US upstream independent ConocoPhillips, Total, BP, Spain’s Repsol, Italy’s Eni and US independent Cobalt International hold Kwanza basin sub-salt licences awarded by Sonangol in 2011.
