US president Donald Trump claims credit for having sparked a tentative alliance between Israel and Arab Mideast Gulf states by taking a stronger position against Iran. But his decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital shows limits to the strategy. Overturning conventional wisdom merely underlines a failure to consider consequences. Trump's "commitment to a future of peace and security for the region" is more likely to heighten instability and extremism.
