Impairments hit European oil frms’ results

Leading European oil companies’ second-quarter results show the impact of hefty impairment charges following large revisions to oil price assumptions. But some frms are standing by previous long-term price forecasts, for now. Shell’s post-tax impairment of $16.8bn is at the lower end of the range that the frm indicated last month, but it still led to a record loss of $18.38bn for the quarter. And Total and Italy’s Eni this week announced large write-downs after lowering their price assumptions, following a similar move by BP.
