After investing billions of dollars in conversion capacity to handle imported heavy crudes,US refiners are awash in light sweet domestic supply. The largest US independent refiners,Valero,Phillips 66 and Marathon Petroleum,are investing in crude toppers, condensate splitters and smaller logistical adjustments to absorb some of the coming light sweet flood.But they do not appear eager to pursue larger,billion-dollar overhauls such as those carried out to install heavy conversion capac-ity at their refineries in the past decade.
