Growing uncertainty is forcing the oil and gas industry to re-evaluate its commit- ment to LNG amid the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic. Cash-strapped majors and debt-laden merchant plant operators are slashing spending to protect balance sheets, and few are willing to commit scarce funds to costly new projects with an uncertain future payback. Only the world’s “most efcient” LNG producer — Qatari state-owned QP — remains undaunted, with plans to forge ahead with a bold 40pc boost in liquefaction capacity by 2025, chief executive Saad Sherida al-Kaabi says.
