A US Democratic administration should abandon a unilateral approach to sanctions, according to the party’s draft policy platform, which outlines a relaxation of curbs on Iran and Venezuela’s crude exports but promises no sanctions relief for Russia. The non-binding platform, unveiled ahead of the party’s virtual convention next month, calls for a rejection of President Donald Trump’s policy of forcing government change in Venezuela if the Democratic challenger, former vice- president Joe Biden, wins November’s election. “Smart pressure and efective diplomacy, not empty, bellicose threats untethered to realistic policy goals” are needed, the document says.
