Libyan violence escalates

With Libya experiencing its worst vio-lence since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011,hopes of building polit-ical consensus in the country’s newly elected legislature are evaporating. The new 188-member House of Rep-resentatives,which succeeded the maligned General National Congress (GNC),held a swearing-in ceremony in the eastern city of Tobruq on 4 August, for 158 mostly anti-Islamist legislators. The group elected a judge,Ageila Saleh Eissa,as its speaker,replacing former head of the GNC Nouri Abu Sahmein.
