Managing the Allegheny National Forest - and how the Allegheny Forest Health Collaborative Fits

The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. At the forest level this is done by managing the resources using the Land and Resource Management Plan or simply the Forest Plan. Every national forest has a Forest Plan, and each forest is required to update its plan on a ten to twenty year cycle. The Allegheny National Forest (ANF)'s Forest Plan was last revised in March 2007. It will guide the management of the 513,000 acres of Pennsylvania's only National Forest until the next revision. Any Forest Plan is thoughtfully developed with high levels of public participation to address a diverse suite of potential uses and values in a spatially explicit way.
