Pritchardia arecina, a Rare Hawaiian Palm Native to East Maui

Kahanu Garden and Preserve, located in Hana on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG). The remote Kahanu Garden and Preserve focuses on conservation of Polynesian-introduced and native Hawaiian plant species, including Pritchardia arecina Becc, a species of the only palm genus native to the Hawaiian Islands. Located at the foundation of Kahanu Garden is Pi'ilanihale Heiau, a National Historic Landmark, which is considered to be one of the largest cultural sites in Polynesia. Part of NTBG's work includes the collection of rare and endangered plants and using its botanical gardens as safe havens for taxa threatened by climate change, habitat loss and a myriad of other threats.
