Parque Nacional Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa National Park) is located in the Rocha Department in the south-east of Uruguay, 189 miles east of the nation's capital, Montevideo, and just 20 miles south of the Brazilian border (figure 1). Approximately 3000 ha in size, it encompasses a vast region of wetlands and large coastal lagoons bordered on the south-east'by the Atlantic Ocean. The park is adjacent to several protected natural areas — the Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon), a vast freshwater reserve thatcomprises the area of 182 km2, and the Estacion Biologica Potrerillo de Santa Teresa (Potrerillo Biological Station of Santa Teresa) — and also includes Area Protegida Costero Marina Cerro Verde (Coastal Maritime Protected Area Cerro Verde).
