III. Joint training of the amblyopic eye with the healthy eye Every treatment of amblyopia is combined with binocular training after reaching a visual acuity of 0.4. In amblyopia with strabismus, the treatment of strabismus begins at that point. Accordingly, all the apparatuses which are used for orthoptic training should be discussed. Since, however, orthoptics will be discussed separately, we will mention here only the orthoptic apparatuses which primarily serve the binocular treatment of amblyopia. 7. Original cheiroscope of Maddox This is a simple device, in which, by means of mirrors, an example image is presented to the good eye, which is to be traced by pen, guided by the other eye. This ordinary cheiroscope has the disadvantage in most cases that the stimulus for fusion is almost absent and remains weak during the exercise, so that working with the device presents considerable difficulty in cases where binocular vision is not solid. In other cases, the possibility of alternating fixation diminishes the value of the exercises. In order to use the valuable principle of the cheiroscope earlier and more in the service of the combined pleoptic and orthoptic treatment, we have developed two modifications that pursue somewhat different objectives and are to be presented briefly later.
