With the U.S. coming off hitting its highest level of potato exports ever in the 2017 marketing year, in terms of both volume and value, the industry is going to try and keep the export market growing. In order to do that, the U.S. will continue toward what has been a major goal for years, its quest to gain full access to Mexico."It will happen, we will make it happen," said John Keeling, president and CEO of the National Potato Council. "It's just a matter of when."However, keeping existing markets open is also a challenge that needs constant work. In order to safeguard the gains it has already made, Keeling said, the U.S. needs to do something that is also key in solving the problem with Mexico: making sure that trade decisions are made on science.
