Influence of EMS and 60Co on seed physiology of Crambe and its agronomic characteristics.

Physiological process of germinating Crambe abyssinica cv. Meyer seeds was significantly influenced by treatment with different concentrations and doses of ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS; 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7%) and 60Co (60, 120 and 140 kR). Treatmentwith EMS and 60Co at low levels stimulated respiration and raised the activities of ascorbic acid oxidase and peroxidase, which were associated with higher seed germination and seedling growth rates. High levels had inhibiting effects on respiration, the activities of related enzymes, the germination potential of seed, the rate of germination and the vigour of the root system. Yield per plant and resistance to disease of the first generation were also influenced by the treatments.
