Present study aimed meat production augmented with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), essential fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) by supplementation of linseed and Ca-soap in wearier lamb diets. Thirty-six, 3 month old Malpura lambs were randomly divided into three dietary treatments comprising of Control, linseed (10 % crushed linseed) and Ca-soap (5 % Ca-soap), fed for 90 days and slaughtered at 6 months of age to determine chemical composition and fatty acid profile of carcass. All the lambs received a basal diet of ad lib. pala (Ziziphus nwnularia) leaves and respective concentrate mixtures formulated as per the dietary treatments. Hot carcass weight (kg), total fat (%), cooking loss (%) and water holding capacity (%) remained similar (P > 0.05) among the treatment groups. Feeding of Ca-soap reduced (P < 0.05) total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and enhanced (P < 0.05) total monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content in longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle fat than linseed and control groups. Moreover, the ratio of n-6/n-3 values was lower (P < 0.05) in both Ca-soap and linseed group than control but the atherogenic index (AI) was lower only in Ca-soap group. The amount of C18:2 c9 t11 CLA in LT muscle was highest (P < 0.05) in linseed group followed by Ca-soap and control group. Likewise, in adipose tissue the proportion of PUFA, n-3 fatty acids was higher (P < 0.05) in linseed group whereas, MUFA and TI (thrombogenic index) was increased (P < 0.05) in Ca-soap fed group. Similarly, the proportion of C18:2 c9t11 CLA in adipose tissue showed similar trend like LT muscle and highest (P < 0.05) value was observed in linseed fed lambs. These findings indicate that inclusion of Ca-soap and linseed in the diet of finisher lambs resulted in enhanced content of desirable fatty acids in both LT muscle and adipose tissue. Therefore, adding Ca-soap and crushed linseed in diets can be a promising option for modifying fatty acid make-up of finisher lambs and provide better nutritional quality meat to consumers.
