Three stages of lift truck operator training are required for safety, which is clearly stated in guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Laura Nelson, managing director for RTITB, explains what is required and what employers risk by getting it wrong. At RTITB, we hear all too often from employers who believe that their materials handling equipment operators are suitably qualified once they have done Basic Operator Training. However, as an employer, you must ensure that this is backed up by Specific Job and Familiarisation Training before authorising someone to operate in your workplace, as doing otherwise can lead to incidents and investigations that could have been avoided with sufficient training.
