MEPs vote for multiple changes to Commission animal health proposal

Mass culling of animals as a disease control measure should only ever be used as a last resort, MEPs agreed last week, as they adopted around two hundred amendments to a proposed animal health law.Voting through a draft opinion from Dutch MEP Kartika Liotard, the European Parliament's environment committee (ComEnvi) backed far-reaching changes to the unified animal health legislation, put forward by Commission in May 2013.All but a handful of Liotard's amendments were adopted by ComEnvi MEPs, although this is still early days for a document that will now feed into the views of the agriculture committee - before potentially going to a Plenary vote.
