Tighter supplies give welcome boost to EU pig prices

Prices for slaughter pigs are strengthening across the EU as a fall in average slaughter weights causes supplies to tighten in many member states. The EU reference price rose to EUR 1.886 per kg in the week to August 19 - its highest point so far thisyear. Valuations have gained around 4% in the past four weeks and have increased by a similar percentage when compared to August last year. Gains have been fairly consistent across most major eurozone producers, including Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Italy - who have all seen prices increase by around 10 euro cents per kg over the past month.
