European delivered coal prices firmed this week, buoyed by tight supply at the prompt and gains in the swaps market which pulled physical prices higher late in the week. The weaker US dollar continued to support coal prices and attract more buyers. The euro has appreciated in value by around 9pc against the dollar since late-August, to ?0.72 today. There were seven index-relevant deals in the European delivered market. Early in the week, two 50,000 metric tonne December cargoes traded at $103.00/mt and $103.30/mt, respectively, for delivery into Rotterdam only, with exchange of futures for physical (efp).
