The production of antimicrobial compounds from the marine algae is considered to be an indicator of the capacity of the seaweeds to synthesize bioactive secondary metabolites. The present study was carried out to explore the antibacterial activities of methonolic extract of the seaweed Stoechospermum marginatum(broNn alga) and Grateloupia lithophila (redalga)irom Kanyakumari, south east coast of Tamil Nadu, India. Both the seaweeds were tested for their in vitro antibacterial activities against different types of urinary tract pathogenic bacteria (£ coli, K. pneumoniae, S.aureusand P.aeruginosa) using disc diffusion method and the results were compared with the standard drug Streptomycin. In the present study, it is observed that the methanolic extract of 67. lithophila at 750 ug/mL concentration showed maximum activity (88.88%) against E. coli and S. aureus whereas the brown alga S. marginatum showed minimal activity. The results of the present study indicate that the red alga G. lithophila having a significant antibacterial activiy can be used for screening natural products.
