Two grape harvesting machines, one using horizontal shaking and another using vertical shaking, were evaluated for the mechanical harvesting of grape cv. Trebbiano Romagnolo. The effects of vibrations transferred from the shaker to the plants and quality of resultant wine were studied. The extent and duration of the vibrations were measured. The results indicated significant differences between the two grape harvesting machines and, to a lesser extent, between the adjustments used for each machine. The vertical shaking system was more easily regulated than the horizontal shaking system, resulting in less vibration experienced by plants during operation and less crop damage. The former system also resulted in superior wine quality compared to the latter.
