EU exporters make further gains on global poultry markets

The European Union continues to strengthen its position as a net exporter of poultrymeat, with exports outstripping imports by more than 200 000 tonnes in the first five months of this year. Commission data reveals that EU poultrymeat exports in the January-May period surged by 26.5% to 553 856t (cwe) - with Hong Kong, Russia and Saudi Arabia the main destinations. The overall rise is all the more impressive given the slump in shipments to Russia -down 35% on last year to 43 479t. Sales to the Russian market have been hit by Moscow's decision to reduce its poultry tariff rate quota and to make it non-country specific, in line with plans to become more self sufficient. A similar push towards self sufficiency saw Ukrainian purchases of EU poultrymeatfall 12% to 28 219t.
