Results from a two-year trial (1995/96-1996/97), carried out on a sandy-loam soil in Parete district (Caserta) where strawberry is often grown as monoculture, are discussed. Research purpose was to verify soil disinfection effectiveness of two treatments compared with methyl bromide fumigation: 1) solarization under air-tight tunnel; 2) intercropping sweet corn, potentially able to reduce infestation. As an effect of strong repression on soil phytoparassites, fumigation determined better growing conditions for strawberry, which gave the best productive and economic results (t centre dot ha~(-1) 54.84, pound centre dot ha~(-1) 107 million). THe less effective disinfection of solar treatment caused significative reductions of yield (-15.9%) and PLV (-13.6%); this achievement proved cheaper but difficulties for PE distruction (if not biodegradable) could rise. Owing to short-term growing, sweet corn didn't affect soil microorganisms content and, of consequence, production decreased (-27.1% as weight and 27.8% as value); on the other side, the crop got a low environmental impact and, besides, gave a further income of 10 million of lire about.
