The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of combination of L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol on the changes in oxidative stress markers of guinea pigs induced by excessive physical activity. Biochemical parameters, such as lipid peroxidation, activity of xanthin oxidase, total antioxidant status, activity of glutathione and activity of catalase were studied. These parameters were investigated in the serum, liver, skeletal muscle and heart of guinea pigs after exposure to excessive physical activity (swimming test) without (experimental group-EPA) or with (experimental group-EPACE) supplementation of combination of L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. The combination of L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol showed the significant influence on activity of lipid peroxidation and xanthine oxidase. This effect is particularly pronounced in serum, liver and skeletal muscle. The activity of catalase was decreased in the EPACE comparing to EPA in liver. On the other hand, the activity of catalase was not significantly changed in the serum, skeletal muscle and heart of the experimental animals. Supplementation of the combination of L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol has led to a reduction the exercise-induced oxidative stress markers in guinea pigs.
