Beta-B-amino acids form peptide chains which enhance bioavailability of pharmaceuticals. We report effect of intraperitoneal versus oral drench of beta-amino butyric acid (BABA) on hematology and immune markers in Sprague Dawley male rats. Groups of 5rats each were injected intraperitoneally or drenched with 1, 0.5 and 0.25 mg/kg BABA weekly for 4 weeks. Five controls were injected IP or drenched saline weekly. At 4 weeks, blood was taken for hematology and animals were sacrificed for microscopy. Compared with controls there were significant increases (P <0.01) in red blood cells, hemoglobin and packed cell volumes in those injected BABA at any concentration. Total white blood cells increased (P < 0.01) in injected and drenched BABA but only at higher concentrations, whereas lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils, eosinophils and neutrophils increased at any concentration. We found increased (P < 0.01) immunoglobulin (IgG) rats in drenched or injected BABA. Our results simulated those of GABA effects in rats.
