Guest editorial: Safeway's approach to healthcare cost cutting

The spotlight on healthcare reform has brought attention to two great needs: coverage for all Americans and the great need to dramatically reduce healthcare costs. One company, Safeway Inc., has risen to prominence in the reform debate because of its recent success in controlling healthcare costs. Its CEO, Stephen A. Burd, founded the Coalition to Advance Healthcare Reform to promote national legislation to allow more incentives in the form of health insurance rebates to be used to promote behavior change. Mr. Burd writes in The Wall Street Journal, "At Safeway, we believe that well-designed healthcare reform, utilizing market-based solutions, can ultimately reduce our nation's healthcare bill by 40%.
