Improving weight management in primary care practice: A possible role for auxiliary health professionals collaborating with primary care physicians

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended that primary care physicians (PCPs) offer behavioral interventions and intensive counseling to all of their obese patients. However, less than half of PCPs routinely discuss weight loss with appropriate patients. Lack of time, training, and reimbursement are commonly cited barriers to PCP counseling, as is concern about the modest efficacy of most weight-loss interventions.
