Population growth will cut productive land availability

Prime land available for food production in the European Union is likely to diminish significantly under pressure from urban development, amenity and environmental uses and biofuel production - and it is likely that it will be the most fertile agricultural land area which will be reduced by these demands, according to a study* by experts at the Netherlands Wageningen University. At the same time however, there are substantial reserves of lesser quality and marginal land that could be brought into production of food and fuel.
