THERE ARE PLENTY of variables that have the potential to inject a ton of uncertainty into the annual US$2 trillion global petroleum industry as we enter 2019. The Brent futures curve flattened significantly in the last quarter of 2018 as oil prices slumped to mid-US$50/barrel by the end of the year, compared with four-year highs in early October, when the price hit US$86/bbl, as US sanctions on Iran came into force.
