Peste des petits rum inants(PPR) is a devastating viral anim aldisease whose geographic spread hasincreased steadily to over 70 countriesin Africa, the M iddle East, and Asiasince it was first identified in Coted’Ivoire in 1 9 4 2 . It im pacts heavilyon the lives of some 3 0 0 m illio n ofthe w orld’s poorest fa m ilie s whoselivelihoods depend on sheep and goats.The control and eventual eradicationof the disease by 2 0 3 0 w ill contributegreatly to achieving the United NationsSustainable Developm ent Goals(SDGs), in particular SDG1: ‘ Endpoverty in all its form s everywhere’and SDG2: ‘End hunger, achieve foodsecurity and im proved n u tritio n andpromote sustainable a g ricu ltu re ’.
