Santa Barbara Oil Spill Price Tag Continues to Climb

Plains All American Pipeline (Plains) continues to pay for the May 2015 pipeline oil spill in Santa Barbara, California (USA). The spill has cost the community, the environment, and the greater California oil industry dearly as well. Approximately 3,400 barrels (143,000 gallons) of crude oil spilled from Line 901 and flowed onto Refugio State Beach and into the ocean (see OSIR, 9 June 2015 and subsequent issues). Hundreds of birds and animals died as a result. Public beaches, recreational areas, and fishing areas had to be closed while cleanup progressed. The county has lost millions of dollars in tax revenue from the Plains' shut down operation.
