FOCUSED GOVT POLICIES A MUST FOR INDIAN RUBBER SECTOR Dr PK Viswanathan

There are arguments favouring and countering the impact of globalisation on the Indian plantation industry. While some argue that globalisation has benefited the Indian plantation industry in general and the rubber sector in particular, there are others who counter this argument. Some research studies relying on short-term trends indicate that the Indian rubber industry had an impressive growth rate conditioned by factors such as easy access to raw materials (imported), rapidly expanding international market, Government policies on de-licensing / removal of quantitative restrictions (QRs) and tariff reduction in the immediate years following the launching of economic reforms in 1991. Complementing these favourable factors, some argue that the market access provided under the WTO provisions turn as an opportunity for India's rubber industry to get benefited by integration with the international market.
