World shipments of semiconductor materials rose by 11% to US$51,900M in 2018, the highest level since 2011 (Table 1). Growth was led by shipments to wafer processing markets, which increased by 13% (to US$27,800M) in 2017 and by 16% (to US$32,200M) in 2018, reflecting the entry into the market of new producers of 200mm wafers in Japan and China. In terms of region, China was the main area of growth. Chinese shipments rose by 11% to US$8,400M in 2018, 16% of the world total.
