The man who built Indy racers, whipped Ford, and put tire marks on the moon. LAST YEAR, Ford announced its daring return to the Baja 1000. The new Bronco R-a Baja-focused version of the reborn Bronco - was the Blue Oval's vehicle of choice. Squared-off styling, 37-inch tires, and a five-link suspension with 14 inches of front travel and 18 inches of rear travel. A monster. That monster, as it turns out, got its ass kicked. Due to failures of a few rapidly developed parts that (Ford is quick to point out) aren't from the production car, the Bronco R didn't make it across the finish line. Class victory went to the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) Boot, a modernized, high-performance version of Vic Hickey's Baja Boot. Fifty years after its victory in the inaugural Baja 500, Hickey's design was still running with the best and giving Ford hell.
