Interprofessional Education: Learning With, From, and About One Another

Interprofessional education is when people from 2 or more professions come together to learn with, from, and about one another through shared learning activities with the purpose of improving collaboration and quality of care. Interprofessional education programs focus on developing the following competencies: ●interprofessional communication ●patient-, client-, family-, and community-centered ●care ●role clarification ●teamwork ●collaborative leadership ●conflict resolution. The University of Otago in Wellington, New Zealand, has used interprofessional education programs with students in clinically focused disciplines such as dietetics, medicine, and physiotherapy since 2011 and in radiation therapy since 2014. Two of its most successful programs are Whakawhanaungatanga, which started in 2011, and the Interprofessional Visits to Learn interprofessional Values through patient Experience, or INVOLVE, which started in 2015.
