Magnetic Eyelashes in the MR Environment: Magnetic eyelashes were the top beauty-related Google search of 2018. The popular beauty trend should concern radiologic technologists working in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, according to an article published in the November 2019 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology. Penn State Health researchers used a phantom to determine whether magnetic eyelashes worn during MR imaging will cause image artifacts and whether they will detach from a body during a scan. Using 2 sets of randomly selected magnetic eyelashes from the same manufacturer, the researchers created a phantom by drilling multiple 2-mm holes in a plastic container and then running monofilament through these holes to create a grid. Researchers attached the sets of eyelashes to single nylon strings and placed them diagonally in the phantom, which was then submerged in a container of distilled water covered with a layer of plastic film to prevent the lashes from moving if they detached.
