摘要

Recent developments in radiation therapy have made it possible to treat malignancies with a large radiation field; however, setup and dosimetric measurements remain challenging. Total body irradiation (TBI) is a radiation therapy treatment that delivers a specific dose of radiation to the entire body using extended source-to-skin distance with a large field size. Developments in the discipline of radiation therapy (eg, multiple segments, modulated beamlets, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy, and helical delivery) allow improved modeling of radiation dose to target regions while sparing adjacent critical organs. Improved approaches to TBI treatment can improve clinical outcomes. TBI is used to: 1. treat leukemia, lymphoma, and diseases related to the immune system; 2. kill residual cancer cells; 3. create space for stem cell engraftment; 4. prevent donor stem cell rejection.
