Transgender Patient Care Principles in Radiation Oncology

Transgender individuals are those who identify as a gender different from the one assigned at birth. The term transgender does not appear often in historical literature, but the earliest record in the United States is from the early 1600s. Historically, health care for transgender individuals has been limited; however, advancements in medicine have increased health care options for transgender patients. The gender transition process to change peoples' gender presentation involves several types of medical treatment: 1. changing patients' social expression of gender to match their identified gender; 2. cross-sex hormone therapy; 3. surgically altering genitalia and other sex characteristics; 4. treatment with a psychologist to investigate issues related to gender identity and body image.
