Liver Cancer and the Role of Radiation Therapy

Liver cancer is a growing health concern worldwide. More than 700 000 new cases are diagnosed annually, and liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality, with the majority of cases occurring in Asia and Africa. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program reported that liver cancer had the second largest increase in incidence in the United States, and it is estimated that more than 28 000 deaths will occur because of liver cancer this year. Of the estimated deaths, 68% are predicted to be in men and 32% in women. Primary liver cancers account for 2% of all cancers in the United States and approximately 50% of cancers in underdeveloped countries.
