New Varieties: Originals to Regulars In the last few years I have experienced an amazing array of unlikely offspring from several koi spawnings in Australia. For example, who would expect Matsukawabake from an Ochiba Shigure I Kohaku mating? Because of these apparently quite regular events, I would predict that the origin of a new koi variety is quite often a chance occurrence. However, deliberate breeding experimentation towards a particular result is also well recognised, for example the creation of a green koi 一 the Midorigoi. Having created something completely different inthe first place that is also highly desirable to hobbyists, further refinement is by selective breeding for particular features. For example, enhancing growth characteristics or the metallic lustre and pattern definition on the relatively new metallic Kumonryu equivalents, Ki Kokuryu and Kin Ki Kokuryu (photo 21,22) reported to be first created in Japan in the 1990s.
