RINA's technical expertise provides vital support for Eni's ground-breaking Coral South FLNG plant

The Coral South Floating LNG export project,whose development offshore Mozambique is led by Italian energy company Eni,begins production in 2022.When the African FLNG plant comes on stream it will feature a raft of innovative technologies,both topside and subsea that have not been used in an LNG venture to date.For the facility to perform as designed these technologies need to be validated before commissioning,and that role has fallen to Registro Italiano Navale(RINA),the Italian maritime classification society,founded in the port of Genoa in 1861.Driven by growing demand in Asia,the race is on to develop the rich gas reserves off Africa's East Coast,primarily in Mozambique and Tanzania.To date three LNG projects are planned to deliver more than 30 million tonnes per annum from a combined $50 billion in capital expenditure-the Rovuma LNG project,the Mozambique LNG project and the Coral South FLNG venture.These projects are all expected to come on stream between 2022 and 2025.Discovered in May 2012,the Coral South gas field is estimated to hold 16 trillion cubic feet(Tcf) of recoverable gas.Eni's Coral FLNG hull will be deployed in the southern part of the Area 4 licence block operated by Eni in the Rovuma Basin.
