Two utilities have or are in the process of cutting power to more than 1 million state residents in northern, central and coastal California due to strong wind warnings and wildfire alerts.

Pacific Gas & Electric has shut down power to 800,000 customers in 34 central and coastal counties Wednesday while Southern California Edison is preparing to take similar action affecting 106,000 customers in eight counties. The utilities said it will take up to five to seven days to restore power after the wildfire alert is lifted because "every inch” of their transmission lines in the affected area must be visually inspected.
