The US Gulf coast was pummelled by a powerful category 4 hurricane on 27 August, shuttering much of the region’s oil, gas and petrochemical infrastructure and leading to export delays from the key natural gas liquids (NGL) outlet. Winds of up to 150mph (240kph) and storm surges of around 3m were recorded as Hurricane Laura made landfall on the Louisiana and Texas coast on 27 August — the equal-highest on record for the former state, tied with its Last Island storm of 1856. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was a category 5 hurricane that caused over 1,200 fatalities and around $125bn in damage, but had weakened to wind speeds of 125mph (category 3) when it landed in Louisiana.
