Bacteria create conducting nanowires

Scientists have genetically designed a new strain of bacteria that produces conductive wires made of natural amino acids. The structures, which researchers say rival the thinnest wires currently know, are produced from renewable, inexpensive feedstock and do not require the use of harsh chemicals such as those used to produce nanoelectronics.
