In the years since the 2011 Fukushima disaster the Japanese nucle- ar power industry has cost the country’s ratepayers the equivalent of $145 billion, some $94 billion of which was paid to nuclear power plants that were generating no electricity, the Tokyo-based Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center (CNIC) said in a report this week. Comparatively little nuclear power was produced during that period, which led to skyrocketing unit costs relative to com- peting generation.
