Diablo Canyon Stuck in the Crosshairs of PG&E Bankruptcy

Facing mounting legal challenges over its role in California wildfires and a 2010 gas pipeline explosion, PG&E and its operating subsidiary Pacific Gas and Electric are now officially in bankruptcy but with no plans to shut down the two-unit Diablo Canyon nuclear plant before 2024, when the first unit is slated for closure (NIW Feb.1’19). What remains uncertain is the fate of the utility’s request before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for an additional $1.6 billion in ratepayer funds that the utility says it needs for its reactor decommissioning fund.
